This strategy misses the point. A complicated relationship exists between board sex diversity and good governance; such diversity can get a negative, positive, or neutral effect on organizational performance, suggesting that organizations may just reap the advantages of sex-different boards under appropriate conditions. This informative article analyzes which states permit sex-different boards to thrive and which states cause failure. Organizations typically increase female representation on boards of directors to reach one of two targets: improved government or gender equality. Every one of these targets is affected by different conditions and therefore should be approached in a unique manner. Three recommendations are offered herein for organizations attempting to reach each target.
