What Are The Benefits Of Acupuncture Treatment For African Americans With Essential Hypertension Case Solution

Chapter 1

The America is the largest state as well as the super power in the world. It has the world’s largest economy and high living standard, but there are some factors which USA is still lacking. The US has faced high ratio of heart diseases, which has led to the higher cost incurrences in  the US economy. African Americans have the highest rate of hypertension in the US, higher than the Caribbean Blacks who are dependent on West Africans. The idea that there is a genetic component to explain the high rate of hypertension among the African Americans, makes me question what impact the gene can have on this outcome. There is also a theory that African Americans are highly sensitive to sodium and by natural selection of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, only those who  retained fluids and stayed hydrated had survived the long trip being transported in the belly of the ship. These heart attacks are caused by many factors, including: Hypertension, whereas hypertension affects 1 billion individuals around the globe. In USA 29% adults were hypertension patients (Kotchen, 2016). Age plays a vital role in this disorder, as with age it increases, which can reach 90% in some cases (Vasan et al., 2002). In 2009, $475 billion cost incurred due to heart diseases, most of which were because of hypertension, high blood pressure and high level of stress.

The racial disparity in hypertension and its results are well known and discussed in African Americans and so are its risks. Throughout the period, the blood pressure level within African American group gets comparatively higher and is considered as more hypertensive. Whereas the treatment of hypertension and blood pressure has been same from years, which has been backed by proof. High blood pressure among the African Americans cause High Strokes and heart failure. The reasons behind racial disparities and high BP are still not clear.

Problem statement

Hypertension and its relevant diseases are mostly found t in the African American more than they are found in White American. The life expectancy is low in men and women belonging to the African American race, because of high blood pressure and the hypertension disease. Hypertension is the top factor in the US where the adults are mostly affected because of it. The higher ratio of people have suffered from hypertension and the relevant diseases caused by it. The reason of it are as follows:

  • Demographics like social culture and the genetically aspect.
  • High blood pressure, which is the most common disease in the African Americans and it prevails in the population of African American more than it does in white Americans.

Racism is the other factor which encompasses in the African American and can be the element which changes their socio-culture behavior, and their attitudes and beliefs are reflected according to it.

It effects on individuals, interpersonal and institutions.Individual’s racism occurs when they are targeted by the individuals and are mistreated by them. Interpersonal racism occurs when there is a negative and stereotype belief according to any particular group and ethnicity. Institutional racism occurs when there is a difference in the treatment with other institutions and government make policies which promote inequality with the African Americans. Mostly people do not know how to tackle such issues, which causes them to suffer from hypertension, high blood pressure and acupuncture. The problems occurs when there is not a proper procedure planned by African Americans regarding how to cope up with such issues and how to decrease hypertension and stabilize the level of blood pressure. (Kim M.T., 2000).

Statement of purpose

African Americans are discriminated against and are treated with inequality by the White Americans on the basis of racism and the cultural aspect. From the past, the Africans are experiencing such practices being carried out by the white population. This stereotypical behavior is making the African Americans’ self-steam and the moral values down and they are being affected with the low social status and inferiority complex. They are given inadequate health resources and the health benefits are not properly given to them, which leads them to suffer from various diseases. The high ratio of African American men are diagnosed with different diseases, among which at the top is high blood pressure. The poor health is the common issue there and high rate of black population has been facing such health issues throughout the history. The lack of medical services are found in the regions where most of the residents are Black Americans as compared to densely White populated areas.. Moreover, the White Americans are always considered superior over the Black Americans and socio-economic lacking is prevailing because of this inequality and social injustice.

This study will explore the impact of acupuncture as an effective remedy for treating African-Americans who are diagnosed with hypertension. By doing so, we may be able to mitigate the underlying factors that lead to early and ongoing health issues for this group of people as well as for others who experience similar social determinants of health.  the statistics are mentioned as follows:

  • Hypertension occurrence was higher among non-Hispanic black (40.3%) than non-Hispanic white (27.8%), non-Hispanic Asian (25.0%), or Hispanic (27.8%) adults.
  • Occurrence of controlled hypertension was 48.3%, which tended to increase with age for men but not for women.
  • Hypertension control was higher among non-Hispanic white (50.8%) than non-Hispanic black (44.6%) or non-Hispanic Asian (37.4%) adults.
  • From 1999 to 2016, hypertension prevalence remained unchanged. For controlled hypertension, prevalence increased from 1999 to 2010,but remained constant till 2016.

It is assumed that the systematic review will be done without any bias and without the influence of any other factors.  The study followed the ethical considerations, whereas we have made sure to follow the ethical grounds, because we know that it is very important to follow the ethical considerations.

Limitations and delimitation

We have done this study for only one ethnic group of African Americans, whereas it can be done for other groups and other countries’ ethnic groups as well. Due to only one group, this study may not be generalized to other ethnic groups. Previously scholars have worked on these topics and have researched other ethnic groups and countries, so the results of those researches were not generalized to other ethnic groups. This is why we are doing research on these topics to explore the acupuncture treatment’s effectiveness for African Americans.

Significance of the study

This study will help the future researchers and doctors to treat the hypertension patients, and will provide  gives insight-son the acupuncture and how it is helpful for treating hypertension patients. This is a significant topic, which should be studied, because many scholars are working on exploring the same topic…………………….
