The case describes the strategic dilemma involved in the decision on how corporate social responsibility (CSR) Department of one of the largest multinational companies in India, Tata Power Company (TPC) of Tata Group of Companies. PTC has conducted CSR activities for decades, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable energy production without undue commitment to human development and the environment. These activities were carried out as a voluntary initiative by employees of PTC, and no separate CSR department. However, with the large-scale expansion, it was estimated the need for CSR as a separate entity. The dilemma for the manager decision was whether the creation of a separate CSR department or continue with the existing raised. Other issues should be addressed strategically and tactically to maintain a balance between the interests of shareholders and other stakeholders.
