Sustainable Tourism: Heritance Kandalama Resort of Sri Lanka Case Solution & Answer

In 1992, when Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings PLC (ashh) of Sri Lanka has announced its intention to build a resort in an area with several ancient archaeological sites and a rich natural biodiversity, local communities and environmentalists were concerned about adverse effects development in the region. In response, developers Resort launched in environmental, social and community development programs supported and sustained to preserve the physical environment for the benefit of the surrounding communities and the participation of local people in the operations of the station. The station, Sigiriya Village has continued to receive numerous international awards for environmental management and social and community development. It was the first hotel in Asia to receive the Green Globe 21 certification in 1999. The resort has also raised the profile of its parent, ashh as one of the pioneers of sustainable tourism in Asia. This case study examines the practices of (a) strategies / programs of social and community development and environmental management Sigiriya Village, (b) the development of an organizational culture anchored on sustainable development, and (c) Human Resources which has supported the development practice? of sustainable tourism practices.
