Although the management of the supply chain has been addressed from different points of view, the role of the global supply chain as a mechanism to overcome a severe disruption in the supply chain has not been explored sufficiently. This article examines how Japanese manufacturers have responded to the recent earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. Based on case studies of Japanese manufacturing firms, this paper presents a discussion of the process of restoring the supply chain after major natural disasters and humanitarian riot and reflects the lessons of planning supply chain disaster response and recovery. Critical skills information design, portability and supply chain scattering are discussed.
