In this world of increasing complexity, managers naturally seek the advice of experts to chart a path forward. However, they find a jumble of metaphors, methods and models, all too often, the old wine in new bottles. This article helps administrators to reduce clutter. It has a triangular framework that integrates concepts, despite the language contrast, are more alike than different. The scheme is based on three types of Venn diagram: disjunction, intersection and containment. Disjunction implies autonomy, containment, intersection control and cooperation. Each organizational strategy is a balance of these three variables. Once the triadic model is provided, managers can “speed read” the literature on strategy, technology / organization, mergers and acquisitions, and cognition, as well as see parallels between these writings. They also become better able to deal with systemic and effective strategic issues, and to communicate to a wide audience of the organization.
