Strategic roads that diverge or converge: GM and Toyota in the battle for the top Case Solution & Answer

General Motors (GM) and Toyota have competed in the global automotive industry for many decades. While GM hung in the number more than any other automaker position 1, Toyota lost this position in 2008. It took 71 years to beat Toyota GM but GM only 2 years to regain the top spot in 2011. With a brief review of the history of these two rivals, I explain why GM and Toyota have shown different ways to get the No. 1. I contend that the reason for the reversal of the leadership positions of these manufacturers can be understood by examining executive pride and how the path dependence or promoting an output of a route established for the perpetuation facilitates leadership market. Then I show how GM and Toyota acted contrast relative to path dependence and how his pride injected in much the same way in their decisions to hold on to the top of CEO. Unlike the longstanding myth also shows that it was pride – as opposed to humility – that characterized the leadership of Toyota executives in the last 15 years. Recommendations for practice or budding leaders of large companies are given.
