Innovation is a discipline, a body of knowledge like no other. Unfortunately, our understanding and practice of innovation today is roughly where our understanding of the discipline “character” was there two or three decades. Therefore, we see many leaders stumble in their efforts. The good news is that, like all disciplines, innovation can be learned, practiced and mastered. Like any innovation that happens in a community, and the foundation of the superior performance of a community is to have a common language, then managers need to learn the lingua franca of innovation – its structures, principles and concepts, methods and processes , frameworks and tools. As such, the first step in creating a community of innovators is the lingua franca of teaching innovation. It is only then that the community is able to practice and master the discipline of innovation
