Social Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Farming in Indonesia Case Solution & Answer

Oded Carmi was a social entrepreneur fighting for a “Green Bali.” Sari Organik began as a model farm to grow organically to market requirements and benefit the local community while serving as an educational center for small farmers in the region. Thirteen years later, the idea was not accepted, as he had expected. The case provides information on social entrepreneurship, providing a background of Carmi, the environment in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, in the broad sense, and discusses some of the challenges faced entrepreneur as founder and owner of Sari Organik farm and restaurant “Warung Maliah Bodag “(basket overflowing). The main challenge was to reproduce and maintain their organic rice cropping pattern in Bali and possibly other parts of Indonesia. His first thoughts involved some options: (a) To use the system established people and leadership (religious and civil) to reintroduce the traditional culture of rice in Ubud, Bali and finally Indonesia. (B) To introduce a new model, such as micro-franchise in which he (the micro-franchise) would be to hire a number of local producers (micro-franchises) and provide the necessary resources to grow organic rice, (c ) To enter into a joint venture with the few existing organic rice producers in the region. (D) For the development of your business as a sole proprietor, ie, buy more land and increase production of organic rice – it was their least preferred option because it would contradict its mission community involvement. The case may be a good starting point for discussion on the impact of modernization in a traditional society and the role of business in society. Carmi from Israel, tried to revive traditional farming techniques that were more sustainable and healthy. Carmi has had to come up with a strategy soon, and was open to other viable options for reproduction and survival.
