This is the second in a series of lecture notes that, tied together in a manual, you might call “practical regression.” The purpose of these notes is to complement the theoretical content of most statistics texts with practical tips based on nearly three decades of experience of the author, along with over a hundred years experience of colleagues who have offered advice. As the title of the “practice of regression” suggests, these notes are a guide to a regression in practice. This white paper explains the fundamentals of regression analysis. Students who read this note will be able to explain the basics of regression, including (1) as a alegbraic regression equation (2) for categorical variables the nonlinear terms, (3) and R-squared goodness of fit and (4) report the importance and economic significance of the regression coefficients. After completing this work, students will be prepared to consider specific issues in the regression that are covered by other Articles in this series.
