Manville Corp. Fiber Glass Group (C) (Abridged) Case Solution
To the shock of Manville Corp.’s senior management, they were advised by none other than government officials in Japan to not remove the label that gave a cancer warning on the company’s diatomaceous earth (DE) products.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has ruled that a component of DE is probably carcinogenic, and Manville has prepared to alter its labels and material safety data sheets and to mount a communications effort advise customers of the cancer warning. Now, Manville’s senior supervisors are being told that it is “culturally inappropriate” to go with this strategy in Japan.
