This case opens to a fictional yet common situation of a business executive who does not know how to respond to a distributed denial of service (DDoS). It provides some anecdotes and statistics about DDoS attacks, and then briefly tells the story of Michael Shim, nicknamed “Mafiaboy” which, as a young teenager actually launched attacks that closed companies like Amazon, CNN, Dell, eBay and Yahoo basic process ! DDoS explained and asked students to evaluate whether the punishment fit the crime Shim, the relatively low level of IT skills needed to launch a devastating attack, potential risks for traditional businesses (non-computer-based ) and whether online trading is too risky.
