Lessons learned from Brazilian multinationals internationalization strategies Case Solution & Answer

The internationalization of emerging market multinationals is a recent phenomenon is the importance of the global economy. This expansion abroad of a new generation of companies challenged the theories and practices established in the field of international trade (Cazurra Raven, 2007). In this article the question of whether there is something to learn from these companies in emerging markets and overseas expansion is addressed. Focusing on international trajectories of four Brazilian multinationals (ie, Odebrecht, Embraer, Marcopolo and Stefanini), this study examines the strategies and management processes during and after the recent economic crisis in regard to internationalization. Our qualitative fieldwork suggests that the trajectories of these Brazilian multinationals are highly structured and evolve in response to the opportunities they face in international markets. It seems that the four companies in the sample shared a strong entrepreneurial spirit and strong motivation to expand its international operations, despite the crisis and the obstacles they face. Our conclusions and suggestions as to the lessons learned should provide interesting implications for other managers of multinationals from emerging markets, providing a better understanding of how Brazilian multinationals expand internationally, given the economic crisis, and manage relationships with local and foreign institutions .
