Leadership and management.
Leadership and management are complementary to each other, as managing tasks is not possible without leadership. If a manager is not a good leader, it means he cannot manage people efficiently; therefore, an effective management requires leadership characteristics to complete the task with efficiency.Specifically in the organization, if leadership and management are not integrated;it will face problems. Therefore, both roles cannot be separated. Management has five steps, which are: planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and controlling (HenriFayol), and there are three managerial levels: top managers, middle managers and front-line managers.
However, they both are not the same thing,but the roles of managers and leaders overlap each other. For the achievement of goals; the companies need managers who are also good leaders, who can help in planning the task, managing the task and people and disseminating the information with the team members. To get the task done and to achieve the goals on time, with efficiency; the company employees must be motivated and their attitudes must be integrated with the task. Therefore, to motivate the employees; managersneed to have management skills as well as leadership skills, which are:leadership,time management, stress management, innovation and creativity, communication, information gathering, negotiation, coaching and mentoring.
There are various leaders who are considered as great leadersbecause of their management skills, and an examples of which in the recent yearsare:
Sam Walton developed Walmart.inc with determination and consistent improvement.
Lou Gerstner decision for repositioning IBM from a manufacturer of mainframe computers into the different market of computer software was made possible because of his management skills and clear vision.
Leadership and management in the business world
Warren Bennis focuses on highlighting the differences between the managers and leaders and for this purpose; he discussed the features of each of them and created a link between their characteristics. The characteristics that make the leader different from the manager, are that leaders do the right things, they develop people, they inspire trust, they challenge the status quo and they are visionary. Whereas, the managers are transactional leaders, administer and maintain tasks and people, focus on system and structures and they imitate and rely on power to control people……………………………….
