In the 1990s, in Eastern Europe, a tide of English language paper issued following the fall of the Soviet empire. One of the most important was the Kyiv Post, which by the end of the decade had created a reputation as the top sovereign news resource in Ukraine. By 2006, from its shoestring starts it had become a $US55 million business. But, the autonomy and survival of the paper was seriously tested in the aftermath of the international monetary catastrophe.
