How to Overcome a Power Deficit Case Solution & Answer

At some point in their careers, most of the leaders, even the most talented will face an energy deficit. Regardless of their titles and responsibilities they will face nominal situations that have influence and authority to do their jobs effectively. Fortunately, two strategies can almost always help marginalized Executive catch more weight and build a foundation for sustainable power. A variety of situations can lead a manager in an energy deficit. Demographics (race, ethnicity, gender or age) can contribute to the plight of the poor executive, as inexperience, bad reputation, personality, background, training or prospects. It can happen to people with high potential. It can even happen that the executives who are already very efficient. Generally, an executive finishing with a deficit of power because he or she has not one or more of the following energy sources: legitimacy, resources and critical networks. The high level of interaction between these three sources of energy means that the shortage can easily produce a shortage in the other two. The authors argue that, in general, leaders who have a lack of power can solve the problem in one of two ways: either have to play the game more efficiently or change the game, for example, redefining its role in the organization. The authors provide examples and recommendations and provide a brief questionnaire to help managers identify potential power outages. The good news is that the chances of success are good. The authors report that their coaching job with 179 executives struggling with energy deficits, only four have failed to improve the situation.
