H-E-B: Creating a Movement to Reduce Obesity in Texas Case Solution & Answer

In January 2012, HEB Grocery Co., a chain of private retail stores in Texas and Mexico, entered the HEB health program to their customers. The program, which began with the employees of the company a few years ago, was an effort to educate and inform customers on how to lead a healthier life. CEO Craig Boyan had in mind was to create a movement of healthy living throughout the state of Texas, where obesity was high compared with other states in the U.S. But how far to go with your employees and customers was a matter for the President and COO Craig Boyan and his team fought. On the one hand Boyan thought HEB, long recognized for their involvement in the community has a role to play in health and well-being of Texans. On the other hand, recognized that HEB was primarily a retailer who had to compete with the likes of Walmart. I had to make sure that HEB has been serving its customers what they wanted, to try to influence their buying behavior towards healthier foods. Some would say that HEB has no role in changing lifestyle and food for their employees or customers. But Boyan and his team thought otherwise.
