This case examines the strategies of Charles W. Engelhard, an American mining magnate has invested in apartheid South Africa. Engelhatrd is widely believed to have been the model for Auric Goldfinger James Bond villain. During the 1950s and 1960s Engelhard, which was connected with the leaders of the Democratic Party in the United States, including President Lyndon B. Johnson, was one of the largest U.S. investors in this country. His close relationship with Harry Oppenheimer, director of the Anglo-American Society, gave great weight to the system of the South African company. The case begins with the anti-apartheid demonstrators protest outside a prize giving ceremony in Newark, New Jersey. Provides an opportunity to discuss the political and ethical companies in repressive regimes responsibilities and challenges faced by entrepreneurs operating in countries with different value systems and political regimes.
