From Patrimonio Hoy to Arte en Concreto: Tailoring a Social Responsibility Program at CEMEX Puerto Rico Case Solution

This case study examines how CEMEX adapted its flagship social responsibility (CSR) specific (Patrimonio Hoy) to the socio-economic conditions of Puerto Rico – Concrete Art Foundation (the Foundation). The Foundation has an association among several entities of the private, public and nonprofit. CEMEX, the senior partner and founder, Concrete Art provides a means to promote concrete as an art form while contributing to economic and social development of Puerto Rico. The purpose of the Foundation is to rehabilitate inmates through vocational training. The case also discusses a number of external factors that have affected the Foundation in 2008-09, as global and local economic recession, a slowdown in the construction sector, the destabilization of a public-private partnership for a new political party within the government, and a general distrust of CEMEX environmental assessment. The Board staff needed to develop a strategy to ensure the future of the Foundation.
