Cities have an unprecedented opportunity to change the way they provide and use energy. New eco-cities like Dongtan in China in the lead, and existing cities are turning to technologies rooted in the past – adobe architecture for passive solar heating. When supplemented by conservation, more efficient technologies and new decentralized services, small-scale power, these efforts can help cities trusted navigate the challenges ahead, while reducing the impact of climate change. The authors show that, well, the transformation of energy in cities can be the door to the security and vitality of urban life.
