Ecovative Designs (Ecovative), a start-up in New York, uses an innovative process of combining agricultural waste and mushroom mycelium (“roots”) to develop forms for use in a wide variety of applications, including material protective packaging. Not only this new product replaces the need for environmentally damaging alternative, extruded polystyrene, but the production process is more energy. In recent years, Ecovative has expanded from one laboratory to a large institution partially funded by research grants and contracts in part by two large corporations. In 2013, the partners are considering signing a contract with Sealed Air, one of the largest distributors of packaging materials in the world, but the deal would mean relinquishing control over the only profitable segment of their business.
