Recently, designers move toward evaluation and have been using their skills to a host of issues that were the terrain of company strategists. With this shift has come the realization a design-based strategy, or ‘design thinking’, is nicely suited to handling some of the most complicated challenges organizations face. Supervisors, they say, often follow an extremely analytic procedure, making choices by understanding all the choices that are available and rigorously establishing the best path. By comparison, designers learning as they go, prototype and iterate thoughts and regularly developing new ideas and comprehension of the issue along the way. They detail the designer’s strategy – which contains embracing restraints and ‘building to determine’, demonstrating how this leads to ‘development through design’.
