Despite a long tradition of household savings, Japan has supported a dynamic and technically sophisticated consumer loans. The high profitability of the sector has regularly attracted the attention of national and international banks investors. More recently, in 1998 and 2000 respectively, Citi Financial and GE Capital Business Credit Once acquired Japanese consumers. In 2006, when the Supreme Court of Japan decided that a major Japanese consumer lenders must reimburse the borrower for “overpayments” to interest, U.S. companies must decide how to respond.
