Bayer CropScience in India (A): Against Child Labor Case Solution & Answer

Examines how Bayer CropScience has addressed the issue of child labor in their supply chain cottonseed in rural India between 2002 and 2008. Bayer has been operating in India for over a century. In December 2002, the Bayer Group has completed the acquisition of the Indian company Aventis CropScience. Bayer CropScience has learned about the incidence and prevalence of child labor in its cotton seed business based in India recently acquired acquisition a few months later, in April 2003. The acquisition of Aventis brought on board an Indian company known Proagro that had operations in cotton seed production and marketing – a new segment of the supply chain of Bayer. Child labor was widespread in the production of cotton seeds – a traditional practice of being, not only by farmers in India, but also by hundreds of companies in India then they represent about 90 percent of the share market. The case (A) refers to Bayer’s decision whether, when and how to implement an auto-run program that would direct responsibility for monitoring and eradication of child labor in rural India.
