A&D HIGH TECH MANAGING SCOPE CHANGE Case Solution & Answer

A&D HIGH TECH MANAGING SCOPE CHANGE Case Solution

The cost performance index and the schedule performance index shows that there are problems in months June, July and August as a result of the cost performance index, which means that there is problem with the staffing of the workers. However, the schedule performance index shows that the project is behind the schedule in June and this would delay the entire project duration. If the value of any of these ratios is less than or greater than one then it indicates a problem as seen in the table above. Lastly, the CR ratio is the combination of the schedule and the cost ratios and a CR less than 0.9 or greater than 1.1 indicates a problem. Therefore, we cans see in the above EVA that that cost control does not have any problems in the months of July and August. However, the cost control has issues in the month of June and this would increase the current costs of the project above the baseline costs of all the tasks accumulated.

Brining Project Back on Track& incorporating Promotional Bundles Requirement

If the management of the company wants to bring the project back on track and complete it by December 3, 2003, then there are a number of steps that could be taken by the management of the company to do so. The first step is to reduce the build submit order and pages work by around 50% as suggested within the case study which will reduce its costs to %$ 16,800. This will now require 12 person days of work. After this, the project manager should redesign developer 2from the Build submit order pages and components task towards the build of the ERP interface. We assume that both of these project activities have the same characteristics therefore, the developer 2 can get quickly to speed and avoid all the mythical man mouth. This would increase its costs by $16,800 and the workdays to 30.

After this, we need to incorporate the promotional bundles requirements within the project. The new tasks associated with promotional bundles should be added by assuming that the company will use the current team for testing and the consultants of Microsoft for the configuration work. Three new tasks will have to be added with task IDs of 56, 57 and 58. These three activities would be promotional bundle, promotional bundle configuration and promotional bundle testing with estimated workdays of 0, 3 and 24 respectively. The duration days would be zero, three and three respectively only task 58 will have predecessors of task 48 and 49. The task 46 would be added as a dependency of the deployment roll up task. The working days for the managed project would be reduced to 55 and a rate of $500 per hour would be applied for the Microsoft consultant, which is actually cheaper than other alternatives. This would result in a total cost of $56000 for two-week period working 8 hours per day. This will reduce the overall costs of the project.

Estimated Cost Variance of the Project

If the above steps are taken then the overall cost, variance of the project would be equal to $43, 200 approximately and the online store would be implemented by December 1, 2003.  The percentage cost variance would be equal to around 5.11% (43,200/844980).

Recommendations

Therefore, it is entirely possible to implement the changes, increase the number of the activities associated with the promotional bundle requirements, and thus complete the project by December 1. This would require us to cut some of the project scope features that are not required at all and hiring additional expert resources for the project. This is the least risky approach for the management of the company to achieve the completion of the project by December 1 and by keeping the existing resources of the company such as the current staff rather than the Microsoft consultant. There is no slack in the modified plan and this could mean that if there were any minor delays in any of the tasks of the project then the project would surely miss the deadline of December 1…………………..
